Roland Velich, the winemaker and proprietor of Weingut Moric is an old casino croupier, who left the tables in Monte Carlo and returned back to his homeland of Austria with a dream to make wines. Twenty years later, he is one of the most iconic producers of red wines in the region and has gained a very serious cult following in the wine world. He has all old Balufrankisch vines, many of them pre-clonal from the hillsides on his estate, and vinifies the native varietal as though it is grand cru Burgundy...his wines are like nothing else in the Burgenland.
The nose is all red cherry, wet leaves and earth, whilst the palate is rich dark fruit and pepper. This 2017 vintage is rich and lush and velvet.
