2018 Barouillet Splash
Newsletter Price: $23.99
100% Semillion from 30 year old vines in Mombazillac. My favorite Pet Nat of the season. Yeasty with enough fruit and acid to make this a beach melter and oyster intercourser. It's long and interesting with depth and substance beyond the bottle.
2017 Methode Sauvage Grand Vent Vineyard Pinot Noir
Newsletter Price: $35.99
Organically farmed single vineyard: Grand Vent Vineyard (previously Clary Ranch) in the Petaluma Gap AVA. Fermented 100% whole cluster, 7 days carbonic, followed by another week traditional maceration with one foot tread daily. Aged in neutral oak barrels for 9 months, no additions save for 20 ppm SO2 3 weeks before bottling. Due to scarcity, I didn't get a chance to try. The winemaker says: "The Grand Vent Vineyard, formerly Clary Ranch, might be the coldest Pinot Noir site in the state. Inundated with wind and fog from the Pacific Ocean just a few miles to the West, on land that was once only deemed hospitable for cattle grazing, Grand Vent Pinot optimizes that rare harmony of electric concentration between deep brooding fruit and vibrant acidity. Delicately lifted and floral, while bounding with red fruits, exotic spices, and an alluring briny tang. If Captain Ron drank Pinot Noir, this would be the one."
2018 Aphros Phaunus Amphora Loureiro
Newsletter Price: $26.99
This is one of the strangest wines we've ever tried. In the best way! Biodynamic orange wine made in beeswax-lined amphora in a winery without electricity, really throwing it back to the old school days. Resinous, waxy and funky Loureiro with lots of smoke and spicy olive oil.
2018 Craven Pinot Gris
Newsletter Price: $29.99
Pinot Gris isn't exactly an abundant grape planted in Stellenbosch, but when planted, it is very special. Although it would appear as a 'white grape' it is in fact a lovely coppery/dark rose skinned grape. With this being the case, the winemakers choose not to waste that color, so the wine is fermented on the skins. Fruit is hand-picked, de-stemmed and then treated like a red wine.
2018 Herve Souhaut Syrah
Newsletter Price: $33.99
From 30 year old vines. Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo long maceration without de-stemming. The wine is fermented in wooden tanks and aged on fine lees in second-hand oak casks for eight months then bottled without filtration. Filled with fresh and crushed violets that really sting and dance. Bacon and duck fat with deep black berries and plums immersed in a cool, watered down strawberry texture.
