Sicily's Finest: 2017 Tenuta della Terre Nere

To be great in Sicily, one has to be aware of terroir and not succumb to cliches. One has to recognize differences above all else and be willing to take a punch. Here is the quick story of Tenuta Della Terre Nere:  On roughly 21 hectares, of which roughly half are uprooted and replanted, the rest between 40-50 years old, with 1.5 pre-phylloxera. New Releases from Arnot Roberts: French Mind, California Heart!

Frequent fans of this newsletter will recognize today's producer. Arnot Roberts is a Burgundy/Rhone lovers love in California. Seriously, it is shocking the number of customers who only buy Burgundy, Rhone and Barolo from me but find themselves drawn to this producer as both as a daily enjoyment and QPR wine. Additionally, these wines can age like a mother f$%^er. Stubborn, closed and bursting with life on their first opening. I have had some with a decade of age that barely scrape the surface. The Syrahs are American Cote Rotie, the Chards, Meursault; and the rest, just a hodgepodge of awesomeness.

It never ceases to amaze me how a 26 mile stretch of land can not only show such wealth but continue to contain so many great producers which seem to come out of nowhere. For today, we have two favorites both from Neal Rosenthal. Both Henri Prudhon and Domaine Rollin are highly interesting, well priced and insanely ageable wines that should be household names. Well....they kind of are already, which is why some of them are so limited.

    2017 Jean Philippe Fichet

White Burgundy and Meursault are better than ever with a new generation of winemakers capitalizing on soil diversity to make some of Burgundy’s most exciting white wines.  But there is one other important winemaker pointing the way to the future: Jean-Philippe Fichet. Perhaps this is controversial, but Fichet is perhaps more interested in Meursault than others.
