2017 White Burgundy: Ballot-Millot and Thomas Morey
2017 White Burgundy: Ballot Millot and Thomas Morey
2017 White Burgundy is a mouthful and I don't just mean attempting the pronunciation. These are some of the best I've had recently and will be stocking my own cellar for son's birth year wines. You should do the same!
Ballot Millot I discovered a few years back and have been continuously impressed with their ever expanding quality in Meursault and it's just my style: round, fat, ripe, pungent and exotic.
Thomas Morey has been around a while but has always been the cliche Rodney Dangerfield metaphor. Excellent QPR and an astonishing amount of diversity in the Chassagne Montrachet premier crus.

2017 Ballot Millot Meursault
Newsletter Price: $64.99
BH 89 Points: A slightly more complex nose combines notes of hazelnut, pear and acacia blossom. The richer and more voluminous medium-bodied flavors possess a caressing mouth feel while delivering fine length on the citrus-inflected finish. This is a very good villages and worth checking out.
2017 Ballot Millot Meursault Criots
Newsletter Price: $72.99
2017 Ballot Millot Meursault Charmes 1er Cru
Newsletter Price: $124.99
BH 91-93 Points: The admirably pure nose displays essence of white orchard fruit aromas that are laced with hints of citrus, floral and spice. There is first-rate intensity to the precise and stony medium-bodied flavors that deliver fine length on the balanced finish. This will need to add depth with age but it should do that. Newsletter Price: $64.99
BH 89 Points: Pungent aromas are composed by notes of resin, herbal tea, mandarin orange and whiff of rosemary oil. There is more volume if less refinement to the bold, rich and frank medium-bodied flavors that evident plenty of citrus influence on the dry, firm and promising finish. A quality Chassagne villages
2017 Thomas Morey Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot
Newsletter Price: $89.99
BH 91 Points: Unusually for Morgeot, this too is cool, airy and pure with its essence of green apple, sort citrus and elegant floral wisps. The bigger and richer flavors are not quite as racy though there is better power and volume to the delicious and notably dry finish that exhibits very good depth and persistence. This is an elegant Morgeot. Newsletter Price: $89.99
BH 91 Points: Here too there is a whiff of matchstick residing amongst the even cooler and more elegant aromas of freshly sliced citrus, herbal tea and white flower scents. The wonderfully refined and highly energetic middle weight flavors brim with minerality that carries over to the lingering bitter lemon zest-inflected finish that is also super-saline and vaguely Chablis-like. Lovely and very Baudines in character. Newsletter Price: $89.99
BH 91 Points: A background hint of matchstick character can be found on the cool and nicely airy aromas of floral and white orchard fruit scents that are trimmed in citrus nuances. The sleek, delicious and beautifully well-delineated medium weight flavors possess slightly better mid-palate density, all wrapped in a focused, attractively textured and super-saline finish, indeed this is almost Chablis-like.
Newsletter Price: $89.99
BH 92 Points: There is an ever-so-mildly phenolic character (think olive oil nuances) to the airy and slightly riper spiced pear, apple, grapefruit and floral aromas. The seductively textured and more voluminous flavors possess a bit less refinement and minerality though the impressively long, clean, dry and focused finish is even more complex. I often prefer the Baudines but in 2017 this has a slight edge.
Newsletter Price: $82.99
BH 90 Points: There is a whiff of the exotic to the elegant and relatively high-toned nose that features notes of citrus, floral and a whiff of orange peel. The racy, intense and well-detailed lighter weight flavors are delicious and nicely complex while displaying fine persistence on the dry and linear finish. This won't win any awards for density or power but it is undeniably pretty and should age reasonably well on balance alone. Newsletter Price: $123.99
BH 93 Points: A highly restrained and yet again cool nose features notes of petrol, matchstick, acacia blossom and white peach nuances. There is better volume and richness to the gorgeously textured medium weight flavors that are at once succulent yet serious while exhibiting plenty of minerality on the driving and wonderfully persistent finish. This terrific effort exhibits all of the intrinsic class of a great Puligny.
